Tatopani Border Halted as Massive Forest Fire Rages in Nyalam-Khasa Region

KATHMANDU/SINDHUPALCHOK — The Tatopani-Zhangmu border point, Nepal’s primary land link for trade with China, was officially shut today, January 12, 2026, following a catastrophic forest fire on the Chinese side. The blaze, which erupted overnight in the rugged terrain of the Nyalam-Khasa area, has caused significant damage and created a safety crisis for border operations.

With the Rasuwagadhi crossing already closed due to damage from the July 2025 floods, the shutdown of Tatopani effectively severs Nepal’s land-based trade artery with China, leaving goods worth millions of rupees stranded.

The Incident: Fire in the “Chhobin” Area

According to Police Inspector Jagat Bahadur Rai of the Area Police Office in Kodari, the fire broke out late Sunday night (January 11) in the Chhobin area, a dense forest belt between Nyalam and the border town of Khasa.

Fanned by high winter winds and fueled by tinder-dry vegetation, the fire spread rapidly through the upper hill slopes. By Monday morning, Chinese security personnel notified Nepali authorities that all movement of goods, tourists, and locals would be suspended indefinitely until the inferno is contained.

Current Impact on the Border

The situation at the border remains tense as the fire continues to burn out of control:

  • Visibility and Air Quality: Thick clouds of smoke and falling ash have completely engulfed the settlements of Liping and Tatopani. Residents report that the sky has turned a hazy orange, and breathing has become difficult in the immediate vicinity of the border.

  • Communication Blackout: Local authorities report that the fire has damaged infrastructure on the Chinese side, leading to a disruption in mobile networks and internet services across the border region.

  • Threat to Nepali Territory: There are growing fears that the fire could cross the international boundary. Nepali security forces have been put on high alert, particularly in the Kharani Pokhari area, where the forest is most vulnerable to a potential spillover.

Trade at a Standstill

The timing of the closure is a major blow to the Nepali economy. Since the closure of the Rasuwagadhi route last year, nearly 100% of northern land trade had been diverted through Tatopani.

  • Stranded Cargo: Over 200 containers carrying winter apparel, electronic goods, and industrial raw materials are reportedly stuck on the Chinese side of the border.

  • Market Impact: Traders in Kathmandu warn that if the closure lasts more than a week, it could lead to a shortage of specific consumer goods and an increase in market prices.

Emergency Response

Nepal has officially requested drone surveillance images from the Chinese authorities to monitor the path of the fire and assess the threat to Nepali villages. While Chinese firefighting teams are reportedly on the ground, the steep and treacherous terrain of the Khasa region is making the operation extremely difficult.

“The Chinese side has warned that if the winds don’t subside, the fire could reach the upper cliffs above our customs office within 24 hours,” said a local administrative official. “We are monitoring the situation minute-by-minute.”
