Monsoon Rains Trigger Landslides in Sankhuwasabha’s Silichong, Disrupting Essential Services and Displacing Families
Continuous and heavy monsoon rainfall has led to significant challenges in Silichong Rural Municipality of Sankhuwasabha district. The persistent downpour has triggered a series of floods and landslides, resulting in widespread disruption to essential services across the area. Electricity supply, vital communication networks, and transportation routes have all been severely affected, isolating several communities. Furthermore, the natural calamity has tragically forced six households to evacuate their homes, seeking temporary shelter.
Beyond the immediate disruption of utilities, the educational sector in Silichong has also borne the brunt of the disaster. Two local schools have been compelled to suspend classes indefinitely after landslides caused considerable structural damage to their buildings and destroyed essential educational materials. This closure impacts numerous students and highlights the broader socio-economic challenges posed by the ongoing monsoon season in the region.
Local authorities, including the Silichong Rural Municipality Chairperson, are closely monitoring the evolving situation and assessing the full extent of the damage. Efforts are underway to restore the disrupted services and provide necessary assistance to the displaced families. The incident underscores the vulnerability of mountainous regions in Nepal to monsoon-induced natural disasters and the continuous need for robust infrastructure and disaster preparedness measures.
