Gen Z protesters tear down PM Oli’s photo
A wave of young protesters, representing the Gen Z generation, has taken to the streets to voice their opposition to corruption, mismanagement, and government interference in freedom of expression.
The spontaneous demonstration, which began at Maitighar Mandala and advanced toward New Baneshwor, has electrified the capital city’s atmosphere.
At the Nepal Telecom office in Baber Mahal, protesters expressed their anger by tearing a photo of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
While committing to remain peaceful—avoiding damage to trees, public property, or acts of intimidation—the demonstrators nonetheless symbolically targeted the Prime Minister’s image.
United through social media, the youth carried placards with slogans such as “Discontent is at its peak, leaders are under fire,” “Gen Z shouts, corrupts get shaken,” “Where is the stolen tax going?” and “Our voice, our right.” They also waved the national flag and sang patriotic songs, with some students even participating in school uniforms.
As the protesters reached New Baneshwor, police set up barricades to block further movement, while participants continued chanting slogans against the government.
