Embassies of Seven Countries Express Grief Over Violence in Nepal, Urge Restraint
Kathmandu, Sept 8 – The embassies of seven countries in Nepal have expressed deep sorrow over the recent violence that erupted in Kathmandu and other parts of the country. Demonstrations turned violent on Sunday, leading to loss of lives and multiple injuries.
In a joint press statement issued on Monday, the embassies of Australia, Finland, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.
The statement read: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and injuries resulting from these incidents. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and express our sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of all those injured.”
Reaffirming their governments’ commitment to the universal rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, the embassies stressed that these fundamental freedoms must be fully protected. “Our governments reaffirm our strong support for the universal rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression,” the statement noted.
The embassies also called on all stakeholders in Nepal to exercise maximum restraint and to resolve the situation peacefully. “We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalation, and ensure that these fundamental rights are protected,” the statement added.
The joint message comes at a time when protests in Nepal have been intensifying, with frequent clashes reported between demonstrators and security forces. By issuing a collective statement, the diplomatic missions have signaled the international community’s concern over the growing unrest, while urging dialogue and peaceful resolution.
