Historic Milestone: Legless Russian Ex-Soldier Rustam Nabiev Scales Mt. Everest Using Only His Arms
KATHMANDU: In an extraordinary feat of human endurance and willpower, Rustam Nabiev, a Russian ex-soldier who lost both his legs, has successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest using only the strength of his arms. By conquering the world’s highest peak without the aid of legs or prosthetics, Nabiev has etched his name in mountaineering history by setting an unprecedented world record.
In 2015, Nabiev’s life took a drastic turn when a military barracks building collapsed in Russia while he was sleeping. While the tragic incident claimed the lives of numerous soldiers, Nabiev survived but had to undergo amputations below the waist, losing both of his legs. Refusing to let his physical limitations confine his aspirations, he turned to extreme physical challenges and mountaineering.
Using the sheer power of his two arms to pull his body forward, Nabiev launched his ambitious final Everest expedition on his 34th birthday. He successfully stood atop the 8,848.86-meter peak during the spring climbing season, leaving the international mountaineering community and the entire world in absolute awe.
Veteran mountaineers have described his achievement as a phenomenal example of the human spirit triumphing over physical adversity. With this historic climb, Nabiev has not only redefined what is possible in high-altitude mountaineering but has also sent a powerful message of hope and resilience to people facing difficult situations worldwide.
