Protests in Nepal demanding monarchy on the rise

Thousands of Nepali citizens recently gathered in different parts of the country to demand the reinstatement of the monarchy and the re-establishment of Nepal as a Hindu state. The demonstrators, waving national flags and chanting slogans in support of former King Gyanendra, called for the abolition of the federal democratic republic established in 2008.

This protest is part of a series of demonstrations advocating for the return of the monarchy and the country’s Hindu identity. In November 2023, tens of thousands filled the streets of Kathmandu with similar demands, leading to clashes with riot police who used batons, tear gas, and water cannons to disperse the crowds.en.wikipedia.org

Prominent figures like industrialist Durga Prasai have also been vocal in these movements, organizing campaigns that call for the abolition of the federal system and the restoration of the constitutional monarchy.

Nepal transitioned from a Hindu kingdom to a secular republic in 2008, following a decade-long civil war and the 2006 People’s Movement, which curtailed King Gyanendra’s powers and led to the abolition of the monarchy.

However, segments of the population have continued to advocate for the monarchy’s return, citing concerns over national identity and stability.

The recent protests underscore the enduring debate over Nepal’s political and religious identity, reflecting the complexities of its transition from a monarchy to a republic.
